Game Terms & Conditions

These General Rules were last updated on February 16, 2023 and take effect from that date.

  1.1         Definitions

a.     For the purposes of the Group 1 Sports Application, regardless of device used to access the Application (mobile phone, tablet, web browser, etc.), the following definitions apply:

i.     Player refers to a real-life individual with an account on the Group 1 Sports application (also referred to in this document as “you”).

ii.     Stable Name refers to the in-game display name associated with a player’s Group 1 Sports account. The Stable Name is chosen by the player and can be changed at any time by the player. Players identify each other by Stable Names and Avatars when interacting in the application.

iii.     Avatar refers to an image associated with a particular player’s account and, together with the stable name, publicly identify a player in the application. A player may change avatars at any time.

iv.     Game refers to a particular game instance, such as a specific Race Day game, available for players to join in the Application.

v.     Game Type refers to a particular category of game available on the Application. Example: Race Day is a game type.

vi.     Home Screen refers to the main home page of the Application. From the Home Screen, a player can browse, see details for, and enter games from the list of currently available games.

vii.     Account refers to the area of the application in which a player can get help understanding “how to play” the games, update personal details, update game details, add or edit payment methods, update account settings, update notification settings, or request support from Group 1 Sports.

viii.     Race Day Game refers to a “daily fantasy sports”-style game type available for players to join in the Group 1 Sports application. Each Race Day game corresponds to a particular real-life racing meet. Players should read the Race Day game FAQ and refer to the help section on the Account Screen within the application to understand the rules of a Race Day game.

ix.     The “Big Game” refers to the foundational game anchoring a Race Day event. Any player wishing to participate in a Race Day game must join the “Big Game” by paying the entry fee for the game.

x.     Game Details refer to the combined game information of the Point Scoring System and the Prize Payout Table. Game details are communicated to a player before the player confirms and pays the required game entry fee. Game details are available from multiple areas within a Race Day game.

xi.     Race Day Schedule refers to the schedule of races making up a Race Day game, including the scheduled start times for each race. The Race Day schedule of races for a Race Day game has a 1-to-1 correspondence with the schedule of races for the real-life racing meet.

xii.     Points refer to in-game points which are earned by a horse (or a combination of horses) in a player’s stable achieving point-scoring events in a Race Day game by achieving certain race outcomes in the real-life corresponding race. The point-scoring events for a particular Race Day game are outlined in the game’s point scoring system and can be viewed in the game details.

xiii.     Leaderboard refers to an ordered list of players participating in a game sorted by rank.

xiv.     Rank refers to the position of a player on a given leaderboard as determined by the player’s current point total for the relevant game. Prize payout tables list which ranks are eligible for which prize amounts at the conclusion of a given game.

xv.     Lifetime Points refers to a cumulative sum of points scored by a player over the course of the player account’s history.

xvi.     Player Status refers to an in-game global ranking of a player at the account level, unrelated to any individual Race Day game. The Status categories are based on percentile cohorts of the overall population of Group 1 Sports accounts. Currently, a “Maiden” status is assigned to all players who have never won a cash prize in a game. A “Group 1” status is currently granted to the top 33% of all non-maiden accounts. “Group 2” is for the next 33% cohort of non-maiden players and “Group 3” for the bottom 33% cohort of non-maiden players. The calculation for globally ranking players (i.e. at the account level) takes into consideration lifetime points earned in the rolling 12 month period prior to the current month (for example, if the month is July 2023, the calculation of status will be based on points earned for the period July 2022 through to June 2023). Prior to the first anniversary of the commercial launch of Group 1 Sports, this calculation will be based on the period “Launch date to prior month”. This calculation may change from time to time at the sole discretion of Group 1 Sports.

xvii.     Point Scoring System refers to the list of outcomes (or combinations of outcomes) in a Race Day game which result in points being awarded to a player. There is a standard set of point-scoring events for a Race Day game but there may be variations from game to game, at the discretion of Group 1 Sports. The point-scoring events for a particular Race Day game are clearly communicated in the Application to players entering or considering entry into each Race Day game. Example: if a horse in a player’s stable places first in its race, the player will be awarded a certain amount of points. A particular Race Day game may also have bonus point-scoring events which depend on a series or combination of outcomes, such as a player’s stable holding 3 point-scoring horses in the same race or a stable which has a point-scoring horse in every race of the Race Day schedule. The point scoring system for each Race Day game is listed in game details. A player is responsible for checking and being aware of the point scoring system

xviii.     Race refers to a real-life race which is part of a real-life racing meet. A Race Day Game is composed of the relevant Races in correspondence to the races making up the real-life racing meet.

xix.     Stable refers to the collection of horses a player drafts (selects) within the context of a Race Day game. A player controls a different stable for each Race Day game the player has entered.

xx.     Draft Market refers to the section of a Race Day game in which a player drafts (or selects) horses to create and manage a stable.

xxi.     Horses (or Competitors) refer to the real-life horses (running in real racing fixtures) which can be drafted (selected) to a stable by players.

xxii.     Draft Price refers to the price, denoted in the in-game currency “horse bucks”, of a particular horse available in the Draft Market for a particular Race Day game.

xxiii.     Horse Bucks (denoted by H$) refer to the in-game currency allocated to a player’s Stable Balance for drafting horses for a stable. A given Stable Balance of Horse Bucks can only be used within the associated Race Day game. “Horse Bucks” have no real-currency value and are merely used to facilitate game play.

xxiv.     Trade Back (or Trade Back Program) refers to the game feature which allows a player to “sell” a drafted horse back to the draft market to recoup most of the initial funds spent drafting the horse. The amount received when trading back a horse depends on its original draft price and also the trade back tax percentage (%).

xxv.     Race Day Game Parameters refer to the characteristics of a Race Day Game, including Stable Rules Parameters, Horse Pricing Parameters, and Prize Parameters. These Parameters are specific to each particular Race Day Game and may vary across Games but will not change for a specific Game once it has been created.

xxvi.     Stable Rules Parameters include:

1.     Stable Balance refers to the quantity of in-game currency (“horse bucks”) allocated to a player in a Race Day Game to draft a Stable of Horses. The initial Stable Balance will decrease over time if horses are drafted; conversely, the Stable Balance may increase if a player uses the trade back feature to recoup funds.

2.     Maximum Stable Size refers the maximum number of horses a player can hold in a stable.

3.     Maximum Number of Horses per Race refers to the maximum number of horses in any one race a player can hold in a stable.

4.     Trade Back Tax Percentage (%) refers to a percentage “tax” which applies in two situations:

a.     When entries for a Race Day game close (the schedule jump time for Race 1), all player stable balances are subject to a one-time tax as per this percentage;

b.     When a player uses the trade back feature to sell a horse back to the draft market, the player receives less than the original draft price of the horse – the player receives only (1 – trade back tax %)*(draft price). Example: if you trade back a horse in your stable which has a draft price of H$100,000 and the trade back tax percentage is 25%, you would receive H$75,000 back.

xxvii.     Prize Parameters include:

1.     Entry Fee refers to the fee for a player to join a Race Day game.

2.     Big Game Commission (%) refers to the percentage (%) of each player’s entry fee for a Race Day “Big Game” retained by Group 1 Sports as a commission. The remaining portion of the entry fee is placed into the Total Prizes for the “Big Game” for that Race Day Game.

3.     [removed]

4.     Minimum Prize Payout refers to the minimum prize a prize-winning player will receive as a percentage (%) of the game’s entry fee. E.g. if the entry fee is $10 and the Minimum Prize Payout is 200%, the minimum prize a prize-winning player will receive is $20.

5.     Percentage (%) of Players Winning a Minimum Prize refers to the percentage (%) of players in a Race Day game who will receive at least the Minimum Prize Payout.

xxviii.     Total Prizes refer to the total prize money available to pay out winning players at the conclusion of a Race Day game. While a Race Day game is still accepting entries, this value will increase as additional players join the game. Once entries are closed (at the scheduled jump time of the first race on the Race Day game schedule) the Total Prizes value will no longer change.

xxix.     Prize Payout Table refers to a table (shown to players entering and playing a Race Day game) which reflects the current minimums for prize payouts. It defines various “buckets” of winning ranks and the prize payout for players ranking in that “bucket”. When game entry is still open (i.e. before the scheduled start time of the first race in the Race Day schedule), this table will be dynamic. As new players enter the Race Day game, the prize amount awarded to players in each bucket may increase and/or the size of some buckets may increase. The structure of the prize payout table may vary from game to game, but the table for each particular game is clearly communicated to players in the Application. While the values shown in a game’s Prize Payout Table may increase due to its dynamic nature, the underlying logic of the Table’s structure will not change for a given game.

2.1         Entry into a Race Day Game

a.     You must have a registered account in order to enter a Race Day game.

b.     You can select a Race Day game you wish to enter from the Home Screen. The Home Screen contains a list of upcoming Race Day games (shown as a vertical list of “cards”). The Home Screen also shows active Race Day games you have entered and are currently playing.

c.     If you click “Join” on a Race Day game card, you will be shown game information including the rules, prize payout, and schedule information, before confirming you wish to join the game and pay the necessary entry fee.

d.     If you confirm your intent to join the game, your account will be charged the listed entry fee and you will be placed into the Draft Market. In the Draft Market, you can browse all available horses (or competitors) running in races on the Race Day.

e.     Once you have drafted at least the minimum number of horses into your Stable, you will be able to proceed to the Race Day game screen.

f.      By joining a game, your entry fee will be accepted by Group 1 Sports as a counterparty in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. When you join a game and pay an entry fee, you bet with Group 1 Sports, not with other players who use the Group 1 Sports service. Group 1 Sports accepts all liability for paying out any winnings won by a player in accordance with the applicable game Prize Payout Table.

g.     The entry fee will be considered to have been accepted by Group 1 Sports when the application confirms your entry and places you into the Draft Market for that particular game.

h.     The entry fee for the “Big Game” for a Race Day game is pre-determined by Group 1 Sports and non-negotiable. Players are required to pay the entry fee to enter a game.

i.      You may make changes to your Stable after you have entered a game and initially proceeded through the Draft Market for the first time. Until the scheduled jump time of the first Race on the Race Day, you can make changes with no penalty. After the schedule jump time of the first Race, changes to your Stable are subject to the terms of the Trade Back Program.

j.      After the scheduled start time of a race passes, you will not be able to draft or trade back horses running in that race.

k.     Group 1 Sports does not permit you to cancel an entry into a game once it has been accepted. Exceptions to this rule may be made at the discretion of Group 1 Sports.

l.      All game entry fees paid by players will be considered to have been placed, received, and processed in the Northern Territory (NT).

m.   All real money transactions in the application (deposits, withdrawals, game entry fees, and prize payouts) are listed in Australian dollars (AUD$) and indicated with a “$” currency prefix.

  3.1         Game Types

a.     The Group 1 Sports application currently offers only one game type (Race Day) but reserves to right to add or remove game types in the future at the sole discretion of Group 1 Sports.

b.     Race Day Game: See definition above. The Prize Payout Table for the “Big Game” for a Race Day game is established with a minimum number of winning players and minimum payout amounts for the various winning ranks. As players join the “Big Game” for a given Race Day, the number of winning players and/or the payout amounts will increase, and these changes are reflected on the dynamic Prize Payout Table for that game.

  4.1         Game Rules

a.     Each game will run in accordance with these Terms and Conditions and the applicable game rules.

b.     Group 1 Sports may place restrictions on the games you can enter at its discretion based on criteria such as the number of games previously played and the total value of prize payouts you have received. Group 1 Sports will use best endeavours to communicate such restrictions to you via email or by listing restrictions in the game rules.

c.     Voiding Race Day games

i.     If 100% of the Races within a specific Race Day game schedule are completed on the scheduled day (are not postponed to a later date, abandoned, suspended or cancelled) then that Race Day game will continue as per normal.

ii.     If less than 100% of the Races within a Race Day game schedule are completed on the scheduled day (are postponed to a later date, abandoned, suspended or cancelled) then the game will be cancelled and entry fees refunded. In such circumstances, no prizes will be paid for these games. Any points scored in the game before it being voided are also forfeited and will not be counted towards a player’s lifetime points.

iii.     The above policy is due to the fact that players approach each Race Day game as a whole when drafting a stable and creating a game strategy. Even a single race being cancelled or abandoned can ruin an otherwise sound strategy. So if even a single race on a Race Day schedule is cancelled, the Race Day game is considered void and all entry fees refunded to players.

iv.     If a race jumps at a time later than the originally published start time, but still takes place on the originally scheduled date of that Race Day game, it is considered legitimate and will NOT cause the Race Day game to be voided. A race is only considered “postponed” if it is pushed out to a future date – NOT if it jumps behind schedule but on the correct date.

  5.1         Scoring

a.     During a Race Day game, you will earn points as the Horses in your Stable compete in their Races in accordance with the Point Scoring System for the applicable Race Day game.

b.     The Race results and statistics used to calculate the Points will be those supplied by the Group 1 Sports official racing data provider, being a Third Party Supplier. No results or statistics other than those supplied by this official racing data provider will be used or considered by Group 1 Sports for any game scoring or results.

c.     The Group 1 Sports official racing data provider is Dynamic Odds, a BetMakers Limited company.

d.     Group 1 Sports reserves the right to change its official racing data provider(s) at any time by amending the Terms and Conditions. It is your responsibility to review the Terms and Conditions to understand the official racing data provider(s). Should a significant change such as this occur, Group 1 Sports will use reasonable endeavours to bring this change to all Group 1 players’ attention via in-app and/or email communication.

e.     Whilst the Application will show “close to live” updates on Points scored by players, the final result of a game is not determined until the finalised race results and statistics are confirmed by our official racing data provider(s) and final Points are calculated at the conclusion of a game.

f.      Horses that are scratched or otherwise do not compete in a Race will not earn any Points. Players who select a horse that does not compete will receive zero points for that horse. A player is solely responsible for monitoring scratches to horses in the player’s stable and replacing scratched horses if desired.

g.     Each player competing in a game will be ranked from highest to lowest in accordance with the total Points scored by horses in the player’s Stable.

h.     Horses competing in Races which are cancelled, postponed, suspended, or rescheduled to another date will not earn any Points.

  6.1         Prize Payouts

a.     Group 1 Sports accepts all liability for paying out any winnings won by a player on a successful entry and ranking in a game in accordance with the applicable Prize Payout Table.

b.     At the conclusion of a game, each player will be ranked according to the total Points scored by the player’s Stable. The final finishing ranks will determine which players are to receive prize payouts in accordance with the Prize Payout Table for the game.

c.     A prize payout is provided to successful players in a game and represents the payment to a player of winnings on a successful entry and ranking in a game.

d.     In the event of ties between two or more players, meaning that they have scored the same number of points, the following tie-breaking rules will be applied.

i.     First, compare the number of “first place” positions achieved by each players stables. The player with more “first place” positions wins the tie-breaker.

ii.     If players are still tied after the above, compare the number of “second place” positions achieved by each players stables. The player with more “second place” positions wins the tie-breaker.

iii.     If players are still tied after the above, compare the number of “third place” positions achieved by each players stables. The player with more “third place” positions wins the tie-breaker.

iv.     If players are still tied after the above, compare the number of “fourth place” positions achieved by each players stables. The player with more “fourth place” positions wins the tie-breaker.

e.     In the event of a dead-heat between two or more players even after the above tie-breaking rules have been applied (e.g. the players hold the exact same stable of horses), the combined prize payout for the finishing ranks which the dead-heated players cover will be combined and divided equally amongst those players who have dead-heated. Here are some examples:

i.     If 3 players dead heat for the first place rank, the prize payouts for first, second, and third will be combined and shared equally between those players. If applicable, the next ranked player will receive the prize payout for fourth place.

ii.     If a game has a prize payout for the top 5 ranked players and 4 players dead-heat for fifth place, the prize payout for fifth-place will be shared equally between those 4 players. The next ranked player will be receive the prize payout for ninth place.

f.      Prize payouts will be credited to winning players’ accounts when all final results and statistics are received and Points calculations finalised, per data utilised by Group 1 Sports from third party racing data providers. In the event of any errors provided to Group 1 Sports, we are entitled to update game results with the correct data and update prize payouts.

g.     All decisions with regard to results, rankings and prize payouts are final and at the sole discretion of Group 1 Sports. Once payouts have been distributed, the game is concluded and no further correspondence with regard to results will be entered into.
